Firefighters in historic Supreme Court case finally promoted

Fourteen firefighters of the ‘New Haven 20,’ whose reverse discrimination lawsuit was decided by the Supreme Court in June, were promoted Thursday after five years of legal wrangling.

For Frank Ricci, the firefighter at the center of the case, the swearing-in ceremony marked a triumph of both the legal system and common sense. “The debate was always about quality officers and merit over politics,” Mr. Ricci says. “It’s been a tremendous sacrifice for all of us, and it’s been a process you really can’t describe – five years of grueling litigation.”

But, he says, he wants to put it all behind him. “I start my next shift on Saturday.”
