Vice President Joe Biden serves hot dogs, Colbert defends US troops from tofu.

Stephen Colbert rode to Joe Biden's rescue, who faced PETA's wrath for serving hot dogs to American troops. Meanwhile, Jon Stewart says if this is the "Summer of Recovery," the US should prepare to subsist on Ramen this fall.

On Tuesday's "Colbert Report" Stephen Colbert was outraged that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) criticized Vice President Joe Biden for handing out hot dogs to US troops on Colbert's show last week as they welcomed troops back from Iraq.

"PETA! How can you attack the vice president for feeding our soldiers?" Colbert queried.

In defense of Biden, Colbert shot back: "Pissing off PETA is as easy as pie - delicious, kitten pie. Personally, I don't see a problem here. Vice President Biden was giving out hot dogs, not meat."

In a letter to Biden, PETA suggested that he honor US troops with items from a delicious, vegan diet, such as veggie dogs, and promoted the use of the organization's "Lettuce Ladies," models of a vegan diet for future administration events.

"Which is it PETA? Delicious food? Or vegan food? It can't be both," Colbert concluded.

Will Colbert defend Lady Gaga's meat dress from the VMA's with the same enthusiasm when PETA comes knocking on her door?

Daily Show skewers Biden

And PETA wasn't the only one going after Biden last night. Jon Stewart chastised the VP for calling this summer the "Summer of Recovery."

"What was he talking about?!" Stewart exclaimed.

The Obama administration touted in June that "summer 2010 is poised to be the most active Recovery Act season, with tens of thousands of projects underway across the country that will help to create jobs for American workers and economic growth for businesses, large and small," according to Biden in June 17 media reports.

But, "The 'Summer of Recovery' is quickly sliding into the 'Autumn of Nothing but Ramen Noodles For Dinner,'" Stewart retorted after a clip featuring the many setbacks the American economy has suffered this year.

Home sales were at an all-time low in July, over 50,000 jobs vanished, we had "'dismal economic numbers,'" and "'stocks ended with a miserable august.'"

Stewart asks, "Could the administration have come up with a more ill-conceived name for the summer?"

If Biden is to keep the comedians – and PETA – at bay, he'll need a new item on his To Do list:
