Twitter blew up with the news that Santorum bested Romney by a mere 34 votes. Santorum received 29,839 votes, compared with 29,805 for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, according to the Iowa Republican Party's certified results. There is some controversy - votes cast at eight precincts were actually lost. However, election night reporting showed those districts favoring Santorum by several dozen votes and so they would, at least reportedly, increase Santorum’s margin of victory.
"No non-incumbent Republican has ever won BOTH Iowa and NH . . . until Romney."
Now, Romney’s language has changed to say that the results are a “virtual tie” - although Romney was only ahead by eight votes while Santorum is up by 34.
Now, on to the best of Twitter:
"Real news flash from Iowa: 2012 Romney loses to 2008 Romney by 144 votes. Four years of work actually weakened his support in the heartland."
"There is a heads-I-win, tails-you-lose quality to the Iowa outcome that matches what people don't like about Mitt."
The IA caucuses decision is worst for IA. For Santo, it's like getting named prom king ten years after graduation. Horse has left stable...
"no offense to the Iowa GOP but how does one "lose" the vote results from 8 precincts? are they in its other pair of pants?"
Matt Beynon @mattbeynon
"Romney sounds like the T-Ball coach who tells his team they're all winners even though they lost 3-2. Santorum won Iowa, period."
