The bridge that some experts once thought could never be built – San Francisco’s Golden Gate – on Sunday officially celebrates 75 years since its opening May 27, 1937. Despite strong ocean currents, stiff winds, and earthquakes, it stands as a beautiful and functional monument to American ingenuity.  Take this 30-question quiz to see how much you know of the bridge’s story.

1. During the Golden Gate’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1987, 50,000 people were expected. How many people actually showed up?

The crowd that celebrated the bridge’s 50th anniversary was 16 times larger than anticipated, or 800,000 people. About 250,000 were on the bridge at the same time, the single largest load in the bridge’s history. The throng flattened the bowed roadway.
