Well over half of the audience for “Harry Potter” was female, Dergarabedian says, adding that this trendlet has been growing with other films such as the “Twilight” series.

As studio executives are hunting for the next big franchise, says Dergarabedian, they would be well advised to look around for something that teen and young 20-something girls can form an attachment to. “Once they do, they will follow that franchise wherever it goes,” he says.
