While Americans are paying an average of $3.51 per gallon to fill up their gas tanks, the average is far higher – $3.90 – in California. Here are five portraits of how Californians are coping with $4 a gallon gas prices.

Ted Rohrbach is filling his electric company’s truck for $4.21 premium, and counting his blessings that the firm pays for his 100-mile daily commute from Long Beach to San Bernardino.

“I don’t know how they can afford this, I’m just glad it’s not me,” he says.
