"Love Story," based on Erich Segal’s first novel, was dubbed ''the first of the modern-day blockbusters'' in a 2000 Variety article.
Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw meet as Harvard students in this 1970 film, which won an Oscar for best musical score. O’Neal's character gives up everything over the objections of his wealthy family to marry her. The film's tagline, "love never means having to say you’re sorry," is parodied to this day.
As for Boston ties, "Love Story" is thin on them. The Harvard Square "T" station and Harvard Yard feature prominently in the film, but most of it was shot in Toronto.
"Love Story" took in $106 million at the US box office.
