Tiger Woods car accident: He's in 'good' condition, charges likely

Tiger Woods wrecked his Cadillac SUV at 2:25 a.m. Friday in a solo accident that sent the golf superstar to the hospital and set the Web atwitter with speculation and concern.

It was originally reported that Woods was seriously injured, but a publicist later said he was "admitted, treated, and released today in good condition."

Apparently the golfer hit a fire hydrant and then a tree, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Police told the newspaper that alcohol wasn't a factor but that charges are pending.

The sporting news website Bleacher Report wondered if the accident might keep Woods away from any PGA events. His absence in the past has caused a TV ratings slump for tournament broadcasts.

"It's unsure whether or not Woods will miss any PGA Tour events at this time, but if he does, I wonder how the PGA Tour will react. Woods is currently ranked first on the PGA Tour and golf fans have expected Woods to break the PGA record for majors," said the Bleacher Report.

Woods has had a good year with six wins, following an eight-month absence while recovering from knee surgery.

As of Friday afternoon, Woods, the world's highest earning athlete, had not said what may have caused the accident – or where he was headed in the early morning hours Friday – or whether he will attend the Chevron World Challenge that begins next week in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The Woods camp did offer a brief statement on Tiger's official website in which they said, "We appreciate very much everyone's thoughts and well wishes."
