Nicole Kidman stars in 'Before I Go To Sleep'

Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong star in the upcoming film “Before I Go to Sleep,” which is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by S.J. Watson.

Watson’s book was first released in 2011 and follows a woman named Christine Lucas (Kidman) who is told she suffered an accident that causes her to wake up every morning with no knowledge of who she is or what happened to her and that her amnesia results from a violent attack. She begins to keep a video diary and struggles to discover who attacked her and who around her, including her husband (Firth) and doctor (Strong), is telling the truth.

Watson’s novel received mostly positive reviews, with New York Times reviewer Janet Maslin writing that the book has “the summer’s single most suspenseful plot,” though she added that “stories as high-concept as this tend to begin more excitingly than they end.” Meanwhile, Guardian critic John O’Connell found the novel to be “exceptionally accomplished… a brilliant example of how an unpromisingly high-concept idea can be transformed by skillful execution… The structure is so dazzling it almost distracts you from the quality of the writing.” Los Angeles Times writer Jonathan Shapiro was also won over, writing that the book “is a brilliant, nasty noir” and that it “entertains while touching on complex questions of the meaning of identity and memory… One can't help but be impressed by Watson's skill.”

The film is the second recent team-up of Firth and Kidman – the two starred in the movie “The Railway Man,” which was released this past May. Strong has recently appeared in such movies as the 2012 film “Zero Dark Thirty” and the 2011 movie “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”

“Sleep” is scheduled to be released on Sept. 12 in the U.S.
