Toshiba Qosmio F755 laptop: How do you do 3D without glasses?

The Toshiba Qosmio F755 laptop uses its webcam to track the user's eyes, adjusting the image to create the illusion of 3D.

Toshiba showed off the Qosmio F755, its glasses-free 3D notebook, at CES, but today the company revealed more details about the system, including its starting price–$1,699–and its release date of August 16.

The F755 has a 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 in 2D mode, and 1366 x 768 in 3D mode. Toshiba’s technology uses the webcam to track your eyes, and adjust the image on the display automatically so that you get the optimal 3D viewing experience no matter where you sit. This technology also lets you have one window in 3D, and the rest of the desktop in 2D, if you so choose. At the moment, the technology works best with only one person; while other viewers will see 3D images, it won’t be optimized for their position.

The notebook will be able to play 3D content such as Blu-rays, and even upscales 2D content (including Blu-rays) to 3D. At the moment, though, the F755 can’t convert games to 3D on the fly, but Toshiba said it’s working with Nvidia to deliver the appropriate drivers by November. As it has a Blu-ray burner, consumers will also be able to author high-def content and output it to an optical disc.

For the most part, the 3D effect worked well; a Blu-ray of Tangled, as well as a home-made movie, had a nice amount of depth, and we liked that we didn’t have to wear any glasses. However, you need to remain fairly still. If we moved slightly, we saw the screen jump as the eye-tracking technology adjusted the display. But, this is a work in progress, and we’re looking forward to giving the finished product a full review.
