ISLAM KARIMOV, 1991: Uzbekistan's president Islam Karimov was elected with 86 percent of the vote in 1991, months after declaring independence from Russia, and extended his presidency through a highly controversial referendums in 1995 and 2002 that gave him 90 percent or more of the vote.
