God of War: The blood-soaked God of War series seems to revel in its Mature rating. Enemies burst apart, bones shatter, and some of the games feature sex scenes with multiple partners. Modern Warfare 2: For the second time in a month, Modern Warfare 2, a video game set to be released Nov. 10, is in the headlines for its disturbing imagery. A clip posted online Wednesday shows the player assuming the role of a terrorist carrying out a calculated attack at an airport. The player joins a team of four terrorists who use automatic weapons and explosives on civilians waiting at a security checkpoint before shooting their way through a terminal. Activision/AP
The Doom series: The series that popularized first-person shooter games has never been a stranger to controversy. Since the release of Doom in 1993, the game has been called a 'murder simulator', criticized for supposed demonic undertones, and scapegoated by some following the 1997 Columbine school shooting after it was revealed that the shooting's perpetrators were players. The Grand Theft Auto series: These games have been criticized for their their depictions of violence and have been variously blamed for influencing many criminal acts by young people. The Mortal Kombat series: Since their debut in 1992, these bloody fighting games have angered many parents and lawmakers, including Senator Joe Lieberman who conducted hearings in the 1990s about realistic violence in video games. SHNS/Midway/Newscom
Left Behind: Eternal Forces - This game, based loosely on the evangelical Christian book series of the same name, takes place in New York City after the rapture. Players attempt to convert as many people still on Earth to Christianity, physically fight members of the Global Community (a restructured UN), and destroy rock music and secular propaganda. Manhunt 2: This 2007 action game was initially denied a rating and was forced to delay its release until edits could be made to its violent content. Rockstar Games/Youtube
Resident Evil 5: This Japanese-developed action game from 2009 caused controversy after pre-release videos depicting a white hero shooting his way through an African village was shown in 2008. Six Days in Fallujah: This unreleased game generated so much controversy after its 2009 announcement that its announced publisher, Konami, stated it would no longer be publishing the game. The shooter game focuses directly on Operation Iraqi Freedom and the Second Battle of Fallujah that took place in 2004 in Iraq. Youtube
Little Big Planet: This family-friendly 2008 platforming game's release was delayed after developers discovered that some background music tracks by Grammy-winning African kora player Tourmani Diabate included verses from the Koran, an inclusion that some might have found offensive. Youtube

While Sony never confirmed the subject of its announcement tonight in New York City, it has not stopped analysts and gamers from chasing rumors about the next PlayStation console. By now, it’s pretty much understood that the public is expecting a PlayStation 4.
