AVATAR: James Cameron's epic science fiction adventure movie, released on Dec. 18, 2009 has been nominated for several best picture and several other categories, including, Art Direction, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. In the film's fictional future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.
THE BLIND SIDE: John Lee Hancock's sports drama, released on Nov. 20, 2009, and based on a book by Michael Lewis has been nominated for best picture as well as for Best Actress in a Leading Role. 'The Blind Side' is the story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatized boy who became an All American football player and first round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family.
DISTRICT 9: Neill Blomkamp's science fiction thriller, released on Aug. 13, 2009, has been nominated for Best Picture, Film Editing, Visual Effects, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay). In the film, an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.
AN EDUCATION: Lone Scherfig's drama, released on Oct. 30, 2009 has been nominated for Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role, and for Writing, (Adapted Screenplay). 'An Education' is a coming-of-age story about a teenage girl in 1960's suburban London, and how her life changes with the arrival of a playboy nearly twice her age.
THE HURT LOCKER: Kathryn Bigelow's war triller, released on Sept. 4, 2009, has been nominated for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Writing (Original Screenplay). In the film, an elite Army bomb squad unit is forced to play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse in the chaos of war, and must come together in a city where everyone is a potential enemy and every object could be a deadly bomb.
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS: Quentin Tarantino's war film, released on August 21, has been nominated for Best Picture, Actor in a Supporting Role, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Writing (Original Screenplay). The film takes place in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. A group of Jewish-American soldiers known as 'The Basterds' are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.
PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE: Lee Daniels's drama, released on Nov. 6, 2009, has been nominated for Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Directing, Film Editing, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).
A SERIOUS MAN: The Coen Brothers' black comedy, released on Oct. 2, 2009, has been nomniated for Best Picture and Writing (Original Screenplay). The film, based on the book of Job, is about an ordinary man attempting to understand the world around him.
UP: Pete Docter and Pixar's animated adventure, released on May 29, 2009, is the first computer-animated film and only the second animated film ever to be nominated for Best Picture. 'Up' was also nominated for best Animated Feature Film, Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, and Writing (Original Screenplay). The film focuses on the adventures of an elderly widower and a young man as they travel to South America in a house suspended by helium balloons.
UP IN THE AIR: Jason Reitman's comedy-drama, released on Dec. 4, 2009, was nominated for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Directing, and Writing (Adapted Screenplay). The film follows a corporate downsizer as he travels around the world.
