Paul Moller, a Canadian engineer, has designed a flying vehicle that takes off and lands vertically. The flying-saucer style craft, the M200G Moller Volantor, is partly inspired by the cartoon The Jetsons. The craft features eight low-emission Rotapower engines and will be able to reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour, at about 10 feet off the ground, its inventors claim. It can support passengers at a weight of up to 250lbs. And once airborne it can fly for up to 90 minutes, depending upon its speed. Newscom/FILE

A Chinese company, the Harbin Smart Special Aerocraft Co Ltd, has developed a flying saucer that is 1.2 meters in diameter and is able to take off and land vertically and hover at an altitude of up to 1,000 meters.
