Mary Rocklein, then of Groveland, Mass., watched a video of Anna Sinyaeva, a 3-year-old Russian orphan on June 25, 1999. She watched it over and over, deciding against the advice of doctors who advised her not to adopt the child, who was thought to have fetal alcohol syndrome. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

In a room full of children waiting to be adopted, Anna – soon to be renamed Hannah Faith Rocklein – was the fortunate one on this July day in 1999. Orphanage caretakers crowned her with a bow in preparation for meeting her adoptive parents, Mary and Bob Rocklein. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

Hannah tentatively reaches toward her new father, Bob, with help from the orphanage doctor, as her new mother, Mary, watches with tear-filled eyes during their first meeting. Mary holds a stuffed cat, a gift for Hannah, and one of her first very-own belongings. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

Hannah seemed like a little stranger in her new home in Groveland, Mass., on Aug. 9, 1999. She and her new 4 ½-year-old sister, Abby, sharing a pink bedroom full of toys, fought constantly in the first month. And Hannah’s violent tantrums frightened her parents. A social worker advised: 'Love takes time.' Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

By the time Judge Mary Manzi signed the adoption finalization in June 2000, with Hannah on her lap and Abby cheering next to her, the two sisters had bonded. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

Finding balance in her new life, Hannah participated in gymnastics class. The American doctor who had recommended against her adoption pronounced Hannah absolutely healthy, noting only that she had the mental and motor development delays typical of children who live in institutions.Though she was a success in making friends everywhere she went, her reading, speech, and writing skills trailed those of her peers by about a year and a half. Sisters Abby and Hannah (c.) attended choir practice at their church in 2003, joined by their little brother. The girls shared equally in their delight when their mom became pregnant again and Noah - or 'Buddy,' as Hannah called him - expanded the family. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

Hannah (r.) and Abby shared a Cinderella setting in their home in affluent Groveland, Mass. Their pink bedroom was heaped with toys and clothes and was decorated to the max with furniture from Pottery Barn – their mom’s favorite store. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

The Cinderella setting of the sisters’ lives suffered a destabilizing blow when Mary and Bob divorced, and the family home was lost to foreclosure after Bob’s business collapsed in the subprime mortgage crisis. The sisters watched uncomfortably as a classmate moved into their old house – and the pink bedroom that once was theirs. In the tight space of their new house, Hannah (r.), has chosen to sleep in a basement space in 2010. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

Now 13, Hannah (r.) and her sister Abby, 15, have reversed roles. Abby, once the timid one, is now a poised extrovert and Hannah, though still an adventurous outdoorsy girl, is more shy as of February 2010. Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff

Hannah – with Eddie the dog, brother Noah, mom Mary – hopes to visit Russia again soon. She particularly wants to see her old caretakers: 'They might want to know that I’m OK.' Melanie Stetson Freeman/Staff
