In 2009 US military personnel inspected each occupied cell on a two-minute cycle at Camp 5, a maximum-security facility, at the US detention camp for suspected terrorists at the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. The facility is operated by the Joint Task Force Guantanamo and holds prisoners who have been captured in the war in Afghanistan and elsewhere since the September 11, 2001, attacks. When he took office, President Obama pledged to close the military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. More than half the 166 prisoners now there have been cleared for transfer or release, but Congress – and much of the public – is against Obama's renewed effort to close 'Gitmo.'
President Obama is renewing his stalled effort to close the military detention center at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. It was a promise he made when he first ran for president, but one he couldn’t keep when Congress began blocking funds for releasing or transferring hundreds of prisoners captured as part of the war on terror.
