Ann Van Dyk, founder and director of this conservation program, strokes Big Girl. Her work has been instrumental in helping save the cheetah from becoming extinct. Eight hundred cheetahs have been successfully bred and 200 more have been reintroduced into the wild. Melanie Stetson-Freeman/Staff

A pack of wild dogs check out visitors. The African wild dog is the second most endangered species in Africa. The Van Dyk Center has conservation programs for brown hyaena, servals, suni antelope, and riverine rabbits, as well as wild dogs. Melanie Stetson-Freeman/Staff

Tourists from Britain enjoy petting Byron, the center’s feline ambassador. Area farmers are known to shoot wild cheetahs that threaten their livestock. But Ms. Van Dyk has developed a trusting relationship with her neighbors and removes the cats from their properties for free. Melanie Stetson-Freeman/Staff

The center’s general manager, Marilyn Hull, often brings Byron to schools to educate children about the need to conserve cheetahs. In addition, the center offers walking and vehicle tours where visitors can learn about African wild dogs, hyenas, vultures, caracal, and the African wild cat. Melanie Stetson-Freeman/Staff

Two young cheetahs – about 16 to 18 months old – groom each other. The scientific name for cheetah is Acinonyx jubatus. Acinonyx means ‘non-moving claws’ referring to the cats’ non-retractable claws, and jubatus means ‘maned,’ referring to the mantle on a young cheetah’s back. Melanie Stetson-Freeman/Staff
