The famous "Tunnel Tree," which was hollowed out for cars to drive through its trunk, "has met its end." The Pioneer Cabin Tree in Calaveras Big Trees State Park gave way during storms in California over the weekend. The announcement was made by the Calaveras Big Trees Association on Facebook. The Association said the tree "enchanted many visitors" but "the storm was just too much for it." Sequoias can live to be around 3,000 years old. The most common cause of death is toppling during a storm.
