The Icelandic Meteorological Agency lowered its aviation alert from code red to orange on Friday morning following an eruption on Thursday night. The lava from the Bardabunga and Askja volcanoes in Iceland came out of a gap, or fissure, in the ground about halfway between the two volcanoes, and numerous earthquakes were observed on Thursday night into Friday morning. Scientists are studying the two volcanoes for signs of another eruption, and potentially an explosive eruption that could loft ash high enough into the atmosphere to disrupt international air travel. However, that is not considered likely in the near future.
