Twitter continues to grow, partly on the strength of a swath of new mobile applications.

Twitter has seen major gains in membership and traffic, in part due to a spike in mobile use, Twitter executive Evan Williams wrote today on the Twitter blog. According to Williams, the number of mobile Twitter users is up 62 percent since April, when the company first started releasing official mobile apps for the iPhone, Android, and iPhone operating systems.

Meanwhile, Twitter recently reached the 145 million member mark, which is short of the 500 million members-plus claimed by social media giant Facebook, but a staggering number nonetheless. 16 percent of all new Twitter users sign on via a mobile application, Williams noted – and as the selection of official and third-party Twitter applications has grown, that number is expected to grow.

"It’s great to see this kind of variety and growth in the ecosystem as it moves beyond basic Twitter clients," Williams wrote. "These new services help people get the most out of Twitter, contributing to user growth and new business opportunities – both of which are critical to the long-term viability of the ecosystem."

Earlier this year, Google announced that it would provide full access to all of Twitter's public archives. The arrangement has been widely seen as beneficial to both sites: Google gets to keep its results current and dynamic – and chock full of the latest pronouncements from reigning Twitter queen Lady GaGa – and Twitter gets a surge of extra traffic.
