Divine light, on or off the grid

A Christian Science perspective.

In recent years, some people have chosen to live off the electrical grid by generating power of their own. But there’s another kind of living “off the grid”: in countries where the electricity that many of us take for granted isn’t available everywhere. The International Energy Agency has reported that if governments make no change to existing policies, 1.3 billion people, or 16 percent of the world’s population, would still lack access to electricity in 2030, despite increased prosperity and technological advances.

Access to electricity is widely seen as essential to progress for individuals and nations. Many people are devoting great thought to solving this problem, and even those of us who don’t know an amp from a volt can contribute through prayer.

I love the many references to light in the Bible – from the very first, God’s statement “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3) to the account of the heavenly city in the book of Revelation, which declares, “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light”
(Rev. 22:5).

To me, this light is the inspiration of the Christ, Truth, that Jesus came to teach and to prove. He showed us that God loves us and that we are spiritual, the children of Love. Whether or not we presently have electricity or other services, God’s love is already present to provide inspiration that will lead the way to whatever form of light is needed.

Relying on divine Love helps eliminate fears and doubts and the feeling that some are less worthy of such resources than others. So gaining this progress isn’t a matter of some people’s being better than others. Rather, it requires a willingness to think in new terms, to point thought in a more spiritual direction, and to expect proof of God’s abundant care for each of us.

In her book “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy wrote:
“The true theory of the universe, including man, is not in material history but in spiritual development. Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and immortal” (p. 547).

Prayer can free people from the burden of material history and expand their sense of spirituality, with all the promise it offers. Matter can never truly define anyone, because it is blind to spiritual and essential qualities such as honesty, strength, persistence, wisdom, joy, love. These and other attributes constitute true power. They are the true substance of our being, and they enable us to transcend material limitations.

No one can be cut off from the light of the Christ, no matter what their age, their tribe, or their race. That light is shining for each of us, revealing in inspired ways how to see oneself and others as Love’s creation, free of limiting burdens such as corruption, fear, dishonesty, rigidity.

Christ’s light shines everywhere and for everyone, 24/7. It is always bright, and it is what truly leads humanity forward. You could say it’s the one grid that for sure we will never get off. And neither will anyone else.
