Of course, you can't walk in just anywhere and demand a free cup of coffee. Starbucks, among others, has declined to participate (and is getting the Facebook un-love to show for it).
Here are a few places that are participating:
At Dunkin' Donuts, the company is offering a portion of the proceeds from a cup of coffee to be donated to Special Olympics. So grab a cup o' joe and participate in a contest to become their number one fan. The company is launching a new Facebook campaign, 'Ultimate Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Fan Contest.'
According to the social media blog site, Mashable, Fans can enter to win the grand prize -- a trip for two to Costa Rica, a tour of Dunkin's Coffee Lab and 60 months free coffee. The contest was timed to celebrate the company's 60th birthday and pay tribute to Sept. 29.
Don't want to subsidize a huge national chain?
LaMars Donuts, with 30 locations in six states (Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska), is offering a free 12 oz. coffee, if you bring in a coupon off their website.
For the folks in Georgia and Florida, you can sign in to Barnie's Coffee & Tea Co. Facebook page and find out where you can participate in their free coffee day campaign.
No matter where you go to get your coffee today, let your online friends know you are participating by signing in to the National Coffee Day Facebook event.
[Editor's note: Conflicting with reports circulating on the internet, the original version misstated Dunkin' Donuts National Coffee Day promotion. The company is not giving out free coffee.]
