Shoppers pass The Children's Place window display at the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, N.H., Aug. 6, 2009. One money lesson to impart to children during back-to-school is how to shop during sales.

While spreading out your spending may help your family manage back-to-school costs, splurging at sales might be more beneficial, Wollan says. “Given the fact that there are so many sales during the immediate weeks before school, it makes more sense to save the money and spend it all at the time of the sales.”

Sales can help kids understand how they can save money on an item or two and then use that saved money to spend on another item, says Mr. Lemay, who recommends keeping an eye out for sales and coupons.
