I can't believe I read the  W  H  O  L  E   thing – The Civil War: A Narrative, Shelby Foote's 3,000-page trilogy of the US Civil War – an absorbing masterpiece not only for the author's extensive research but for his moving portrayal of leaders and battles, plans and hopes, victories and losses, and the terrible cost of the war for both sides.
