Following the recent PBS documentary series “The Abolitionists,” I was eager to read Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. This autobiographical account of Douglass’s life as a slave, from earliest childhood to his eventual escape, captures the day-to-day realities of slavery with a unique immediacy that is deeply moving.
