I'm reading God's Hotel by Victoria Sweet about San Francisco's almshouse, Laguna Honda.  Aside from the specific story about Laguna Honda's recent history, this is an excellent primer on what has happened in medicine in general, the interplay of forces, that has changed the landscape away from "slow medicine."
