Reader recommendation: The Favored Daughter
Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.
The Favored Daughter: One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan into the Future by Fawzia Koofi is more than a book about one woman’s efforts to survive in a wartorn country, although it is that. It is also a heartwarming account of a family’s love for one another and an upclose and personal account of a country’s culture, informed by the author’s deep love for her nation and her courageous efforts to help her people. Koofi's story is gripping, engaging, and deeply enriching. The book helped me to gain a better understanding and appreciation of Afghanistan and its people.
