Never mind Sherlock Holmes: Try Arthur Conan Doyles’s historical novels. I’ve just read The White Company again, a gift from my parents when I was 12. Great narrative and characters, serious and droll, and lyrical landscape descriptions, too. It’s all here and, Reader, our hero gets the girl! Wonderful.
