An extremely readable book: In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin, by Erik Larson. In 1933 President Roosevelt sent history professor William Dodd to Berlin as ambassador. The book centers on Dodd and his daughter, Martha, living in a country increasingly under the grip of Hitler.
