Wallace Stegner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Angle of Repose is a beautiful read about an artist out West who sends letters to a dear friend back East. I found myself jotting down quotes: “Mexico was my Paris and my Rome.” Now I want to read about the real artist, Mary Hallock Foote, upon whose letters this painterly novel was based.
