Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson, set in an English village reminiscent of Miss Marple’s St. Mary Mead, is a witty and endearing departure from the sex and violence of most current fiction, but with enough of a gentle nod to both to make it an entirely contemporary read.
