Reader recommendation: Long Walk to Freedom

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

By Carolyn Hill, Citrus Heights, Calif. / January 19, 2011

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela follows the author's journey from prisoner to president of South Africa. Though Mandela never deviated from his staunch resolve, he was humble enough to listen, learn, and sometimes compromise in method in order to reach that goal. His humility, civility, and wisdom were recognized and respected by his strongest adversaries. His body was in prison but never his mind. What a manual this book is for dealing with adversity.
