Reader recommendation: Half the Sky

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

By Albert B. West, Westport, Mass. / January 14, 2011

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn ought to be compulsory reading for decent people around the world. It explores the slavery of millions of young girls and women in the sex trade and the indifference of most of society. It is not an enjoyable read, but is essential and compelling.
