Reader recommendation: The Lees of Virginia
Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.
While reading Paul C. Nagel's The Lees of Virginia: Seven Generations of an American Family, I discovered the complicated lives of General Robert E. Lee's ancestors. Now these Lees are more familiar to me: Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee (eulogized President Washington with the words "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen"), Richard Henry Lee (served one year as president of the Continental Congress and was a signer of Declaration of Independence), Francis Lightfoot Lee (signer of Declaration of Independence), and Arthur Lee (served as peace commissioner to France with Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane).
