The Last of the Just

I’ve just finished rereading The Last of the Just by André Schwarz-Bart, an epic drama of Jewish suffering, martyrdom, and transfiguration. It begins with a pogrom in the 12th century and ends in a gas chamber at Auschwitz. It is simultaneously heart-breakingly beautiful and gut-wrenchingly horrifying. We must never forget.
