Alistair MacLeod’s Island is 16 short stories so beautifully written and so heartachingly true that I had to stop after each one to think. [Most] are connected to Cape Breton in Nova Scotia where [characters] fish, mine, farm, or keep a lighthouse. This area …is MacLeod’s childhood home and continuing vacation spot.
