2. 'Building Stories,' by Chris Ware

"Stories" (Knopf Doubleday, $50, 316 pp.) is technically a graphic novel but comes in a package as large as a game board box. Made up of pieces which can be assembled in any order, Ware's writing and pictures tell the story of a woman living in Chicago but also the narrative of her neighbors' lives and even those of animals around them. Start anywhere – it's all fascinating and artfully constructed.
