1. 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk,' by Ben Fountain

In Ben Fountain's latest novel, eight soldiers who survived an intense battle in Iraq are welcomed home as heroes after a Fox News crew filmed the fight. For Thanksgiving, the eight, including William Lynn, are put into the halftime show at a Dallas Cowboys game. But as Billy meets the Cowboys owner, war supporters, cheerleaders and the football players, he becomes aware of bitter truths about himself and his country.
