2. ‘House of Sand and Fog,’ by Andre Dubus III
Dubus crafts a story of good people in conflict, each one laying claim to the same California house. One is an Iranian refugee, yearning to establish credibility in his new society. The other, the house’s former owner, is a substance abuser desperate to reach back to better times. Their deadlock drives the plot forward toward tragedy.
