Pulitzer Prize 2011: Who are the winners in the arts?
From the work of a recent US Poet Laureate to a satire by a Steppenwolf Theatre-affiliated playwright to a Chinese folk-tale-turned opera, the 2011 Pulitzer Prizes for the arts represent a lively and wide-ranging mélange.
1. Fiction: "A Visit from the Goon Squad," by Jennifer Egan
"A Visit from the Goon Squad" twists traditional narrative forms in various creative directions as novelist and short story writer Jennifer Egan blends the stories of multiple characters, all coming to terms with the necessity of not only growing up but also of growing old in today's less-than-nurturing digital society. "A Visit from the Goon Squad" had already collected a National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction and was long-listed for the Orange Prize 2011.
Finalists for the fiction prize: “The Privileges” by Jonathan Dee and “The Surrendered,” by Chang-Rae Lee.
