4. Nicole Krauss, for "Great House"

This latest novel by American author and National Book Award winner Nicole Krauss is the story of a desk which passes through the hands of several writers over a number of tumultuous decades. Monitor reviewer Yvonne Zipp wrote that in this novel, "Krauss's real subject is loss, the giant wrenching ones that her characters can't seem to escape from underneath."
