NBCC award finalists: the best fiction of 2010

3. To the End of the Land, by David Grossman

"To the End of the Land'" by David Grossman (Knopf Doubleday, 592 pp.)

Israeli writer David Grossman’s beautifully written novel tells the story of Ora, whose son Ofer, is away on a military mission. Fearful of receiving news that something has happened to Ofer, Ora heads for the north of Israel and starts walking, determined that she won’t go home until Ofer's mission is over. The knowledge that Grossman's son was killed during his military service and while Grossman was writing the book makes this novel particularly haunting. (CSMonitor review, 12/2/10)
