8. "Mockingjay," by Suzanne Collins

"Mockingjay," by Suzanne Collins (Scholastic, 390 pp., $17.99). "Mockingjay," the third and final installment of Suzanne Collin's wildly popular "Hunger Games" trilogy, is a dark but gripping read. Warning to parents: This a story about warfare and there is considerable violence in this series, but in her protagonist, Katniss, Collins has crafted a fierce, tenacious, and unforgettable heroine with high appeal for both older teens and young adults.
