Ryan Lenora Brown is the Monitor's Africa correspondent, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has reported for CSM from more than a dozen African countries. Her reporting interests skew long, narrative, and offbeat, with a particular passion for exploring African cities and the lives of the people who inhabit them. Before becoming a full-time correspondent for the Monitor, she freelanced widely in sub-Saharan Africa for outlets including The Washington Post, ForeignPolicy.com, The New York Times Magazine, Runners World, Newsweek, and others. Ryan is a fellow of the International Women's Media Foundation (2015-2018) and the International Reporting Project (2016 and 2017). She was a 2011/12 Fulbright Scholar in South Africa and is the author of A Native of Nowhere: The Life of Nat Nakasa
