Ryan Lenora Brown is a freelance correspondent for the Monitor in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has reported widely for CSM from across the continent, including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Botswana, and Malawi. Her reporting interests skew long, narrative, and offbeat, with a particular passion for exploring African cities and the lives of the people who inhabit them. She has been widely published, including at ForeignPolicy.com, Politico, The Daily Beast, The Chronicle of Higher EducationAl Jazeera, Salon.com, and The Denver Post, among others. She was a 2015 International Women's Media Foundation fellow to Rwanda. Ryan holds a Masters in African Studies from the University of Oxford and a Bachelors in history from Duke University. She was a 2011/12 Fulbright Scholar in South Africa and is the author of A Native of Nowhere: The Life of Nat Nakasa
