The US Olympic Committee named Chicago its choice as a candidate city Saturday to host the 2016 Olympics, selecting it over the other finalist, Los Angeles, which put on the 1932 and 1984 Summer Games. Chicago now must compete against Tokyo, Madrid, and other suitors bidding to land the host assignment that the international Olympic body will award in 2009.

An intense spring storm, which was blamed for five deaths in the Gulf states, moved into the Northeast Sunday, bringing gale-force winds, cold temperatures, and heavy rains that threatened coastal flooding. Such a strong spring storm occurs about once every 25 years, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

New Jersey State Police said Saturday they'd found the man blamed for the auto crash that critically injured Gov. Jon Corzine, who has undergone a series of medical procedures since Thursday's wreck and remains on a ventilator. Because the driver who began the highway accident hadn't realized he was involved, he wasn't charged with leaving the scene. Pending an investigation, however, he still could face other charges.

Nine Republican presidential candidates, including former New York mayor and front-runner Rudolph Giuliani, took turns Saturday wooing more than 1,000 GOP activists in Des Moines, Iowa. The candidates gave six-minute pitches at the party's annual Lincoln Dinner. Iowa kicks off the primary season Jan. 14, 2008. Campaign financial figures filed Saturday show Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with twice as much money in the bank as Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Despite a drop in US exports during February, an even bigger decline in imports led to a 0.7 percent reduction in the US trade deficit, the Commerce Department reported late last week. The trade deficit with China fell 13.3 percent to its lowest point in nine months.

Google Inc. will acquire the ad-management technology company DoubleClick Inc. for $3.1 billion, the companies announced late last week.

Crooner Don Ho, who died Saturday in Honolulu, entertained Waikiki audiences for four decades.
