New on DVD: Over the Hedge

Over the Hedge (PG)

"Over the Hedge," the latest computer-animated tale from the creators of "Shrek," follows the Wile E. Coyote-like antics of a coterie of forest animals that wake up from hibernation to find their habitat stolen by suburbia. This helium-light film has a featherweight conscience about the evils of consumerism and a de rigueur message about the importance of family and friends. The vocal talents of Bruce Willis and William Shatner lead the cast through some inspired bits of action - and there are clever nods to classic films (a heartbroken Persian cat howls at the moon for his just departed sweetheart, "Stella!"). The extras are half-hearted at best, but this entertaining DVD will hold up to repeated viewings by the under-10 crowd. Grade: B
