Fort Collins: Money puts its money on the city's livability

Money magazine seems to enjoy surprising people with its annual list of best places to live. Fort Collins, Colo., gets the top nod this year, which could cause folks to scramble for their atlases. If you're wondering, Fort Collins (population 128,000) sits on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, about 60 miles north of Denver. So named because a military outpost was built there in 1864, the city today enjoys a reputation for its quality schools, low crime, and wealth of recreational opportunities. The prices are affordable, too, with a typical single-family home selling for $215,000. The most livable cities, in Money's estimation based on economic and quality-of-life issues:

1. Fort Collins, Colo.

2. Naperville, Ill.

3. Sugar Land, Texas

4. Columbia, Md.

5. Cary, N.C.

6. Overland Park, Kan.

7. Scottsdale, Ariz.

8. Boise, Idaho

9. Fairfield, Conn.

10. Eden Prairie, Minn.
