Who needs express checkout? Go shopping at midweek - late

If you're the grocery buyer in your househould but rankle at congested aisles, toddlers who howl when mommy won't let them have every brightly colored package on the shelf, or the customer in front of you with fistfulls of coupons to be redeemed, perhaps you should consider visiting the supermarket late at night ... on Wednesdays. According to data compiled by the monthly trade magazine Progressive Grocer (on the Food Marketing Institute website), that's the most "untrafficked" time of the week for grocery-buying, in contrast to the normal weekend runs between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The most - and least - popular shopping days and time periods, by percentage of customers who selected them, according to Progressive Grocer:
Sunday 21%
Saturday 18%
Friday 14%
Monday 12%
Tuesday 12%
Thursday 12%
Wednesday 11%
Time of day:
8 a.m-noon 39%
Noon-5 p.m. 38%
5 p.m.-9 p.m. 19%
9 p.m.-8 a.m. 4%
