The editors of the Oxford Dictionary of English have selected 3,000 new entries for their latest edition. The largest one-volume collection of words and phrases in the language draws on such sources as the Internet, newspapers, TV scripts, and scholarly journals to find candidates. Even then, each must be widely known and must have stood the test of time. So which new entry seems to be causing the most comment? That would be ... bada bing, which is defined as "an exclamation to emphasize that something will happen effortlessly and predictably." Its source? The hit cable-TV series "The Sopranos."

For the college-bound: some hot tips on cool schools

With the new academic year barely begun, many high schoolers already are mulling their next step: college. Newsweek and admissions test-preparation expert Kaplan Inc. suggest 12 schools worthy of special consideration in their latest "How to Get Into College" guide. The list features different schools each year and is based on admissions trends as well as interviews with teachers, guidance counselors, admissions officers, and students. The "cool" colleges for 2004:

Best value for the money: Evergreen State College, Olympia, Wash.
Best all-around: Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa
Most career-focused: Bentley College, Waltham, Mass.
Most tech-savvy: (tie) Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh; Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Ind.
Most likely to succeed: Rhodes College, Memphis, Tenn.
Most "old school": St. John's College, Annapolis, Md., and Santa Fe, N.M.

Most fun-loving: Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.

Quirkiest: Reed College, Portland, Ore.
